History: Nothing is known about Alex's history prior to his appearance in canon, but some can be assumed due to what he is. Alex is a Realian, an artificially created humanoid life form similar to an android but comprised of living flesh. As such, he was 'born' physically and mentally an adult and his early life revolved entirely around ensuring that he was capable of carrying out his intended function—in his case, combat. Immediately after being determined fit for combat, he would have been sold to the Galaxy Federation, as he was in their employ at the beginning of the game. It's likely that he participated in a number of small skirmishes over the time he was employed in the military, but none had a major impact on the galaxy at large. As he traveled from planet to planet according to his assignments, he would have experienced a great deal of prejudice from the civilian population, due to an event fourteen years ago in which combat Realians such as himself had gone berserk and caused extreme damage to the main city of the planet Miltia. However poorly he was treated, however, Alex refused to stoop to the level of his tormentors and think bitterly about humanity as a whole.
Not long before canon begins, he was assigned to the spaceship Woglinde for its test voyage. While technically a warship, its passengers included employees of the technological corporation Vector. While none of the Vector employees on the ship were strictly supposed to work on Realians, one of them by the name of Shion Uzuki would frequently bend protocol to assist the staff in charge of caring for the Realians. Due to her willingness to treat Realians as people rather than objects, many of them grew fond of her, and Alex was no exception.
When we first see him, he is undergoing maintenance to download new combat formations. He sleeps through most of the conversation around him, but wakes up to hear his superior officer, Lieutenant Virgil, attempting to convince Shion that Realians were tools. He interrupts the conversation to insist that he acts under his own will, not because he's a tool, but Virgil dismisses him as naïve and leaves.
Later that same day, the ship came under attack by incorporeal monsters known as Gnosis. Under Virgil's orders, Alex and several other Realians set up a barricade at a vital intersection. After an unknown period of waiting, the group opened fire on what they believed to be an enemy, only barely missing before they realized the new arrival was Shion.
During the confusion of Shion's arrival, several Gnosis ambushed the group, nearly killing Shion of not for Alex pushing her out of the way. After saving her, he pointed her toward the escape pods, insisting to her that he would help hold the Gnosis off and she should escape without him. While the Realians responded quickly, their attacks had no effect on the Gnosis and Virgil decided that if the Realians' weapons were useless, he would use them as a weapon. Virgil used a manual override code that had been installed in every Realian since the incident fourteen years ago and took control of all of the Realians' bodies, forcing them to crawl in front of the approaching Gnosis with the intent of making them self destruct. Luckily for Alex, he arrived here instead.
World History: The world of Xenosaga is set roughly 4500 years after the present day. Humanity has colonized a vast number of planets, but Earth, referred to as Lost Jerusalem, has vanished from the maps. Artificial humans, genetically modified humans and cyborgs are not uncommon, although it's now illegal to create the latter two and a large portion of the normal population fears these enhanced life forms.
Since the event known as the Miltian Conflict fourteen years ago, where an entire planet vanished, humanity has also been under siege from a hostile and unknown form of being called the Gnosis. A large amount of technological progress has been focused toward finding ways to fight these creatures and even civilians can purchase combat mecha.

Abilities & Physical Abnormalities: Though artificial, Alex is largely similar to a human. The most noticeable differences are that he has the physical strength and stability to wield high caliber weapons that would normally have to be mounted on a mobile weapon and is capable of using something similar to para-magic, based on nanomachines. Canon doesn't specify which ones he can use, as he's only shown fighting briefly, but I give him abilities similar to cure and fire, plus one that acts as the opposite to blind, increasing its target's accuracy, and another that causes all enemies to focus their attacks on him. As an artificial intelligence, he is capable of connecting to a properly tuned computer system to download information and has an internet-like shared memory bank with other Realians of his type, though the former does leave him vulnerable to hacking and personality rewrites. More subtly, his body is based on silicon rather than carbon.
Personality: Someone once said that Realians never take life without orders from humans, and Alex doesn't make her a liar. Though he understands fully that the nature of his job means he will have to injure and kill, he does so only when it's required of him and is generally friendly when not outright engaged in combat. He takes pride in being a soldier, not for his ability to fight, but for his ability to defend those who aren't suited to combat. This pride gives him the patience to remain loyal to his duties even when he personally despises the officer giving him his orders.
Outside of combat, he is generally friendly, helpful and honest. While, theoretically, he is capable of going against orders or ignoring matters of another's safety, he is genuinely kindhearted and simply unwilling to leave another to die. This is not to say he isn't capable of hatred. While generally easygoing, there are some points which will trigger instant dislike from him, the largest of which being the poor treatment of non-human sentients on the sole basis of not being human. As an artificial being created with a personality tailored to his intended job, he values his ability to learn and make his own decisions based on his knowledge and emotions and is deeply bothered when people claim that he and his kind are tools with only the illusion of will.
On the subject of emotions, whether or not combat Realians feel fear is a subject of some debate in his world. The truth of the matter is that while they aren't supposed to due to their programming, many combat Realians do experience fear at some point. Alex himself is brave enough that his convictions override any desire to flee and level headed enough to keep his cool even in a situation where it's obvious he has next to no chance of survival. Unfortunately, this has the potential to work against him, as he has proven that he's not willing to flee from a combat without permission from a superior even if he knows the best he can do is sacrifice himself to delay the enemy and is aware that the person issuing the orders made no effort to include his safety in the battle plan.
When it comes to more casual interactions, Alex is indeed somewhat naïve. His entire existence has revolved around combat and the military, leaving him inexperienced in more civilian matters. Due to this, he comes across as a bit stiff at times and curious at others, possibly even at the same time as he tries to remedy his confusion on personal matters without seeming disrespectful. It also means that his experience with strong bonds outside of military fellowship is limited and any sort of romantic inclination would confuse him unless someone explained to him what his feelings meant.
What are your plans for the character in-game? As Alex is from a setting where his kind are largely treated as property, I would like to see Alex develop in a situation where he has some measure of control over his own life and is given the same treatment as any other soldier. It's likely that he would begin to become more independent as he realized that people wouldn't laugh off the idea that he has dreams and desires of his own.
Anything else? If you have any questions on just what the deal is with Realians, shoot me a message and I'll be happy to clarify.

IC Questionnaire:
What do you prefer to be known as?
My name is Alex.
How old are you?
I don't believe my actual age is relevant, since I have always appeared and acted the age I do now. Effectively, though, I am the equivalent to a twenty-one year old human.
Do you have any history in combat?
I have fought in several small-scale skirmishes.
If so, have you ever killed?
When my duty called for it.
i) How do you feel when you get involved in some project that calls for immediate and rapid activity?
Situations like that help me focus on the task at hand, as they're similar to combat.
ii) Do you organize and initiate leisure activities?
My training schedule with the Federation didn't leave time for organized leisure activities.
iii) What role do you take when working in a group?
I follow the orders of the designated leader of the group.
iv) How talkative are you around other people?
If I am allowed to spend time conversing, I enjoy talking to people who give me a chance.
v) What three things would you want to have with you on a desert island? State your reasoning.
A connection gear to request rescue, a civilian phone on the chance that the military lines are unavailable and a supply of food to survive until help can arrive. This is assuming, of course, that whatever craft I arrived in has either left or been damaged beyond repair.
vi) Is it important to be liked by a wide range of people?
I would like to be. Realians are capable of loneliness as well.
vii) When the odds are against you, is it worth taking a chance?
Yes. A small chance of victory is better than certain failure.
viii) Do you consider yourself to be an impulsive person?
No.
ix) Would you agree that planning things ahead takes the fun out of life?
It may make things more predictable, but a prepared plan greatly reduces wasted action.
x) Do you like surprises?
I believe that would depend on the surprise. There is a difference between being surprised with a Gnosis attack and being given unanticipated leisure time.
xi) Do you sometimes wonder if there is something wrong with you?
No, as far as I am aware, there are no flaws in my personality layer.
xii) Do you consider yourself to be smarter than your superiors, and disagree with their decisions?
Whether I am smarter than my superiors is irrelevant. If someone is in a position of leadership, then they have proven they know how to do their jobs and should be obeyed.
xiii) Lastly, how do you feel about cabbages?
I...am not sure what that has to do with anything. If I have to form an opinion, though, I suppose there are worse foods.
